TEGIC MEDIA EDITORIAL: DSS Must Look Inward—Russian Flag a Mere Distraction
The recent #EndBadGovernance protests that swept across northern Nigeria have left a trail of devastation. Lives were lost, and properties worth millions were destroyed. What started as a peaceful demonstration against misgovernance and corruption soon spiraled into chaos, with the unfortunate sight of some protesters raising the Russian flag and calling on President Vladimir Putin to come to their rescue.
The sight of the Russian flag fluttering amidst the turmoil has understandably raised eyebrows. It has fueled speculation that external forces may be meddling in Nigeria’s internal affairs. However, this symbolic gesture should not distract us from the core issues at hand or from the real sources of instability within our borders.
Historically, Russia has maintained a stance of non-interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs. There is no credible evidence to suggest that Russia has any interest in or plans to intervene in Nigeria’s governance issues. The raising of the Russian flag is more likely an act of desperation by frustrated citizens seeking attention, rather than a genuine appeal for foreign intervention.
The Department of State Services (DSS) must resist the urge to focus its energies on external threats that may not exist. Instead, the agency should look inward. The true danger lies within—those who have hijacked these protests for their gain. The pattern of violence and destruction points to internal saboteurs who are using the guise of foreign influence to further their nefarious agendas.
It is crucial to understand that these internal actors may be hiding behind the symbolism of the Russian flag to divert attention from their actions. By waving a foreign flag, they aim to create confusion, shift blame, and evade accountability. But history has shown that the most significant threats to Nigeria’s stability often come from within, not from without.
The DSS must remain vigilant, but their vigilance should be focused on identifying and neutralizing the internal elements that have infiltrated and manipulated these protests. The agency must also work closely with community leaders, civil society organizations, and the general public to restore order and ensure that the genuine grievances of the protesters are addressed.
The raising of the Russian flag is a distraction—a red herring meant to divert attention from the real issues that plague Nigeria. The focus should remain on addressing the root causes of the protests: bad governance, corruption, and the socio-economic challenges that millions of Nigerians face daily. These are the issues that matter, and these are the issues that must be resolved if Nigeria is to move forward.
