Nigerians Blast PDP Chairman for Asking Trump To ‘Save Nigeria’s Democracy’

The newly elected National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Tanimu Turaki, is facing heavy criticism after calling on United States President Donald Trump to intervene in what he described as a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

Turaki made the appeal on Tuesday while reacting to the standoff between PDP governors and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

He also repeated recent claims of “religious genocide” against Christians in Nigeria, an allegation the Federal Government, China and several international observers have dismissed as baseless.

The chairman had accused a serving minister of leading thugs to the PDP headquarters to create chaos, insisting that democracy was under attack and the international community must intervene.

But his comments sparked widespread backlash across social media, with many Nigerians describing the appeal as unnecessary and embarrassing.

Joki Joke Julius Jeb mocked the statement, asking “whether Trump had suddenly become the new leader of the PDP”.

Salmanu Rabiu Gwarzo asked whether “Turaki wanted Trump to save Nigeria’s democracy or simply rescue the PDP from its internal crisis”.

Umaru Mohammed told the chairman to “save the party himself”, wondering why Trump was now needed when he was not among the party’s founding members.

Anyanwu Uzoma Victor questioned whether the “PDP would make such an appeal if it were in power at the federal level”.

Ibrahim Abdurrahman dismissed the call, saying “Trump had no business with Nigerian politics”.

Pyefat Nimfat wrote that “people might soon start inviting Trump to settle issues with their wives”.

Prince Ayo Oyedokun said Nigeria’s democracy was not under threat, arguing that the PDP itself was the one undermining democratic norms.

Bashorun Adebayo added that Trump would likely be laughing at the opposition party over the appeal.

Ero Titi criticised the mindset behind the call, asking why some Nigerians now see America as the country’s saviour.

Olusoji Akinyemi said no foreign president would fix Nigeria’s political problems for the PDP.

Chibuzor Ignatius responded sarcastically, saying, “No, Trump is coming to help you.”

Another user, Ignatius Adaeais, went further, accusing Turaki of inconsistency.

He questioned why the chairman did not call Trump when PDP governors allegedly violated court orders during the convention in Ibadan.

He also accused the party of attempting to run two national working committees at the same time.

Abdullahi Abubakar Idris linked the uproar to the PDP’s refusal to allow Sule Lamido contest the chairmanship, saying the party was “joking.”

Waheed Adio said “Turaki might soon call Trump to serve us food.

For his part, Fisayo Alfred argued that “a party that blocked Lamido from buying the chairmanship form lacked the moral right to invite Trump to save democracy.

Mercy Jimmy wondered whether Nigeria no longer had a president. “Are we now Americans?” she asked.

Ibrahim Mohammed warned that calling for foreign intervention in national governance could amount to treason.

Umar Usman Duguri said the appeal showed the level of confusion among Nigeria’s political class.

Turaki has not responded to the growing backlash, but analysts say the controversy reflects deeper divisions within the PDP as its internal crisis continues to escalate
