Nigeria Douses Diplomatic Tension, Apologises to South Africa Over ‘Igbo King’ Row
The Nigerian government has issued an official apology to South Africa following a diplomatic stir triggered by the controversial recognition of an “Igbo king” within South African territory.
The apology was conveyed after the development sparked concerns from South African authorities, who viewed the situation as a challenge to the country’s sovereignty and traditional leadership structures.
In a statement addressing the issue, Nigerian officials clarified that the country does not support the creation or recognition of parallel traditional authorities outside its borders, particularly in ways that may conflict with the laws and customs of host nations.
The federal government stressed that the individual at the centre of the controversy does not represent the Nigerian state, distancing itself from any claims of official endorsement.
According to the report, Nigeria expressed “regret over any misunderstanding” the incident may have caused, reaffirming its respect for South Africa’s governance systems and traditional institutions.
The government also reiterated its commitment to maintaining strong diplomatic ties with South Africa, describing the relationship between both countries as strategic and longstanding.
The controversy had drawn attention after reports emerged that an Igbo leader had been crowned in South Africa, raising eyebrows among local authorities and prompting diplomatic engagement between both nations.
Nigeria assured that steps would be taken to prevent a recurrence, emphasising the importance of mutual respect, non-interference, and adherence to international norms in bilateral relations.
The apology is seen as a move to quickly defuse tensions and preserve the cordial relationship between Africa’s two largest economies.
