Chaos in South Africa as Protests Over Alleged Igbo King Coronation Turn Violent
Violence has erupted in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province following protests against the alleged coronation of an Igbo traditional ruler, with demonstrators torching vehicles and looting shops owned by foreign nationals.
The unrest, which began as a protest led by members of ActionSA alongside traditional leaders and residents, quickly spiralled out of control in KuGompo City, prompting security forces to intervene and disperse the crowds.
Eyewitness footage circulating online showed protesters setting vehicles and buildings ablaze, particularly those believed to belong to foreign nationals. Confirming the scale of the destruction, a report noted that “protesters have torched vehicles and buildings allegedly belonging to foreign nationals in protest against the installation of a Nigerian king in the Eastern Cape.”
The demonstrations were sparked by outrage over what organisers described as a violation of South Africa’s constitutional order and traditional leadership structures. ActionSA’s Eastern Cape chair, Athol Trollip, insisted the party opposed the move, stressing that due process must be followed in matters of traditional governance.
Tensions further escalated after reports of a stabbing incident allegedly involving foreign nationals, while at least two people were hospitalised and several vehicles destroyed in the chaos.
However, amid the violence, Nigeria’s High Commission in South Africa denied that any Igbo traditional ruler had been officially coronated, clarifying that the event in question was merely a cultural gathering. It stated “no coronation took place and none intended,” urging calm and respect for local laws and traditions.
Authorities have since called for restraint as fears grow that the unrest could further inflame tensions between local communities and foreign nationals in the country.
