Tinubu Rejects One Party State Claims, Issues Strong Statement
President Bola Tinubu has dismissed concerns that Nigeria is sliding toward a one party system, insisting that democracy “thrives on vibrant opposition” and reaffirming his commitment to multiparty politics.
Speaking on March 27 at the All-Progressives Congress (APC) National Convention in Abuja, Tinubu responded to critics who have suggested his party’s dominance could lead to one party rule.
“Let us say this clearly and sincerely. We are here for national unity and greatness… Critics can say it anyway they want,” he told delegates, underscoring that the APC does not seek to eliminate opposition parties.
He added, “We do not seek a one party state. Democracy thrives on vibrant and healthy competition,” saying credible opposition plays a crucial role in challenging government policies and refining governance.
Tinubu’s remarks come amid ongoing debate over the political landscape as the country approaches the 2027 general elections, with defections to the ruling party prompting debate about political balance.
Addressing party members, the president also framed his administration’s broader goals as rooted in unity and democratic resilience, reiterating that healthy competition among parties is essential for national development.
Opposition figures have echoed similar calls for a vibrant multiparty system, arguing that robust alternative voices strengthen accountability and democratic legitimacy.
