Inside Lagos APC’s 2027 Zoning Conversations: Who Replaces Gov. Sanwo-Olu ?
As political activity toward the 2027 governorship race begins in earnest, discussions around zoning within the All-Progressives Congress (APC) have taken centre stage, setting off lively debates among party insiders, stakeholders and political watchers.
In recent weeks, speculation has grown that the party could zone its governorship ticket to Lagos East Senatorial District, a decision that would spark fresh conversations about representation, political strategy and the future direction of the ruling party in Nigeria’s most populous state.
Among the names frequently mentioned in political circles are Akinwunmi Ambode, a former governor of Lagos State; Tokunbo Abiru, the sitting senator for Lagos East; and other influential party figures drawn from across the state.
For many Lagos APC big‑wigs, noting the complex political landscape, any zoning decision carries a myriad of implications. “We have to do what is best for the party and the people of Lagos,” one source close to the conversations said, declining to be named. “That means taking into account the views of all parts of the state, including Lagos East, Lagos West and Central.”
Consultations have also touched on balancing political interests and religious representation, particularly given Lagos’s diverse electorate and the need to appeal across communities. Some stakeholders argue that any ticket should reflect that diversity, while others underscore the importance of experience and political heft.
At one meeting of party operatives, a senior APC figure was quoted as saying, “We must be mindful of the message we send to Lagosians.” The remarks underscore the sensitivity around zoning, not just as a technical arrangement, but as a political signal ahead of what promises to be one of the most closely watched contests in the state.
Yet even as names circulate and caucuses deliberate, APC leaders have stressed publicly that no final decisions have been made. “Consultations are ongoing,” a party official told reporters recently, emphasising that any choice would consider both internal party dynamics and the broader expectations of Lagos citizens, a statement that reflects the careful choreography of party politics ahead of 2027.
For now, Lagos’s political landscape remains in motion: conversations continue, alliances shift, and stakeholders across the state watch closely, weighing the permutations that could shape the APC’s ticket in the coming months.
