Tinubu Ordered To Sack Inspector-General of Police over Alleged Killing of Protesters

#EndBadGovernanceInNigeria Organising Committee has called for the dismissal of Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, in response to the killing of protesters. This demand was made during a candlelight symposium held in honour of the victims at the Rights House in Ikeja, Lagos State, on Friday.

The committee, based at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota, Lagos, had earlier declared three days of mourning for those killed during the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests. Amnesty International has reported that Nigerian security forces killed at least 21 protesters during a week of demonstrations against economic hardships.

At the symposium, Hassan Taiwo, National Spokesperson of the Youth Rights Campaign and a committee member, stressed the need for the IGP’s removal, stating, “We are demanding the sacking of the Inspector General of Police.” He noted that more than 40 people had lost their lives nationwide.

Following the symposium, a CDHR candlelight procession was planned to commence in Alausa. However, police officers stopped protesters from proceeding to Alausa, offering an alternative route instead. Taiwo remarked that while the group was committed to mourning those killed, they would not proceed to Alausa due to orders from the Lagos State Commissioner of Police.

He urged group members to take control of the procession, emphasizing that their peaceful approach should not be mistaken for cowardice. He said, “We’ve just been informed by the police that the Commissioner of Police has directed us not to go to Alausa. Comrades, I propose, if you don’t mind, that we take control of this procession ourselves, rather than giving them the chance to dictate our actions. They should not mistake our gentility for cowardice.”
